Aquatic Invasive Species report- Summer 2025

By Jim Benike

Winter has been a rollercoaster ride for us, dealing with Eurasian watermilfoil (EWM). We submitted three proposals for permit applications to the Wisconsin DNR, but unfortunately, they were all rejected. We’re still submitting data and test results from other Minnesota and Wisconsin Lakes to the Wisconsin DNR, hoping to get some help. Most of the information we share is on our website, HalfMoonLake.net, under the plants and weeds section. We’re still committed to get EWM out of Half Moon Lake, and we’re exploring different options. One possibility is to buy an Ecoharvester (weed cutter), but unfortunately, it only works to a depth of 10 feet, and EWM can grow up to 18 feet deep. So, the solution won’t be perfect, but it’ll be better than nothing. The cost is about the same as using chemicals.

On a brighter note, we’re making progress in our battle against Yellow Iris. Yellow Iris blooms from late May to mid-June, so it’s important to inspect your property during this time. If you spot it, you can dig it up or cut the leaves and flowers and spray the cut ends with Roundup or its equivalent. If you need help, feel free to reach out to me at jimb@benike.com or text me at 507-254-1063. I usually treat it from my pontoon, and it takes about 3 to 5 minutes. It rarely comes back. We’ll also be inspecting the lake and marking any Yellow Iris with a yellow marker that says ‘Yellow Iris’. Stay tuned for more updates on our lake-cleaning efforts!
