Protecting Our Lake: CD3 Shore Boat Cleaning Station
By Steve Schatz
As boating season kicks into high gear, we’re excited to announce the CD3 Shore Boat Cleaning Station at the Halfmoon Lake landing is up an running]! This innovative, self-service system is available to all boaters and plays a crucial role in protecting our lake from aquatic invasive species (AIS).
What is a CD3 Station?
The CD3 (Clean, Drain, Dry, Dispose) station is a solar-powered, user-friendly unit equipped with tools to help boaters clean their watercraft before entering and after exiting a waterbody. These tools include:
A high-powered vacuum for removing debris and plant material
A blower for drying hard-to-reach areas
A hand tool for removing invasive species
The station is designed for 24/7 public use and includes step-by-step instructions to ensure proper cleaning procedures are followed.
Why It Matters
Invasive species like zebra mussels and Eurasian watermilfoil can wreak havoc on our lake—damaging ecosystems, reducing biodiversity, and clogging water intake systems. Many of these species spread via boats and trailers that move from one lake to another without proper cleaning.
Using the CD3 station helps stop invasive species in their tracks and is one of the most effective ways for individual boaters to make a big environmental impact. It’s a small effort that goes a long way in keeping our waters clean, healthy, and safe for all.
How You Can Help
Use the station every time you launch or pull your boat.
Spread the word to fellow boaters and friends about the importance of Clean, Drain, Dry practices.
Report any issues with the station to a Halfmoon Lake board member or the Clean Boats/Clean Water attendant.
Let’s work together to be good stewards of our shared lake. The CD3 station is free to use and supports a healthy recreational future for generations to come.
